Who this course is for

Aspiring, newly trained, returning, and experienced birth doulas, postpartum doulas, and newborn care specialists who are preparing applications or updating their professional materials.

Before you begin

No paid client experience is required. Bring a résumé if you have one, your training record, and one real or fictional opportunity brief. Distinguish training, simulation, volunteer work, transferable experience, and paid work throughout.

What you will learn

  • Define a target role and write a positioning statement supported by three relevant facts.
  • Select a résumé structure and produce a tailored summary and competency section.
  • Write at least six evidence-based experience bullets and reconcile every numerical claim.
  • Present credential status accurately and produce a readable application file.
  • Assemble privacy-conscious portfolio samples and consistent public profile copy.
  • Tailor an application to one audience and document availability, offer questions, and next steps.

Curriculum modules

Module 01Professional identity and career direction

Choose a clear professional direction before writing. Separate the work you want from the work you have already performed, then identify evidence that connects the two.

50 minutes instruction + 25 minutes independent study.

Lessons: Role and audience; Positioning and proof; Opportunity analysis studio.

Practical work: Target-role brief and positioning statement. This becomes the first page of the private evidence inventory.

Module 02Résumé strategy and professional message

Organize the résumé around the reader’s decision. A focused summary and relevant competencies should make the role, preparation, and value easy to understand.

55 minutes instruction + 35 minutes independent study.

Lessons: Résumé architecture; Summary and competencies; Message revision lab.

Practical work: Résumé outline, summary, and evidence-linked competency list.

Module 03Experience writing and ethical evidence

Translate care responsibilities into credible evidence. Use records to support numbers and describe your contribution without taking credit for outcomes you cannot establish.

60 minutes instruction + 45 minutes independent study.

Lessons: Writing experience bullets; Metrics and records; Evidence and privacy audit.

Practical work: Six revised bullets and a ledger listing claim, evidence source, calculation, date checked, and whether the item may be shared.

Module 04Credentials and application file readiness

Make qualifications easy to verify and application files easy to read. Keep credential wording and dates consistent across the résumé, portal fields, and private records.

65 minutes instruction + 45 minutes independent study.

Lessons: Credential accuracy; Applicant tracking systems; Export and portal lab.

Practical work: Credential index, tailored résumé, and a brief file-quality check showing the requested format, selectable text, reading order, and consistent facts.

Module 05Portfolio and professional presence

Build a small, relevant portfolio that demonstrates how you work. Connect the résumé, cover letter, biography, and public profile through consistent facts and professional language.

60 minutes instruction + 40 minutes independent study.

Lessons: Cover letter and profile copy; Portfolio selection; Sharing and consent review.

Practical work: Cover letter, biography, profile draft, two sample pages, and a public-versus-private sharing checklist. A social profile does not need to be published.

Module 06Application strategy and portfolio review

Adapt the package to one opportunity and prepare for the next conversation. Review readiness through evidence, clear terms, and follow-through rather than the appearance of the documents alone.

70 minutes instruction + 50 minutes independent study.

Lessons: Audience and offer readiness; Application process and review criteria; Assessed portfolio review.

Practical work: Final application portfolio, terms brief, tracker, 30-day plan, and response to faculty feedback.

What you will create

  • A tailored résumé and reusable master résumé structure
  • A cover letter and professional biography
  • LinkedIn headline and About section drafts
  • A credential index and private evidence inventory
  • Two original portfolio samples and a sharing checklist
  • An application tracker and 30-day action plan

How completion is assessed

Complete the six modules and assignments, pass each scenario check, and complete the course’s final assessed task. Instructors provide feedback and a route to revise work that does not yet meet the standard.

The final task is a reviewed application portfolio with an evidence inventory, tailored résumé, supporting documents, and a 30-day plan.
