Who this course is for
Birth doulas, postpartum doulas, and newborn care specialists preparing for family consultations, agency screening, return-to-work conversations, and staffed-household interviews.
Before you begin
PD9 is helpful but not required. Bring an accurate résumé or experience summary and one target opportunity. Learners without paid experience may use clearly identified training, simulation, volunteer, or transferable examples.
What you will learn
- Produce an interview brief that separates verified facts, assumptions, and unanswered questions.
- Deliver a 45-75 second introduction and three concise behavioral answers.
- Respond to role-specific, inclusion, boundary, and safety questions within actual competence.
- Explain availability and professional terms and ask questions that reveal workload and fit.
- Make a reasoned opportunity decision and prepare an appropriate follow-up.
- Complete an assessed mock interview and demonstrate targeted improvement after feedback.
Curriculum modules
Module 01Interview strategy and opportunity research
Treat the interview as a two-way decision. Research the actual opportunity, clarify your role, and decide what you need to learn before accepting an engagement.
45 minutes instruction + 25 minutes independent study.
Lessons: Capability trust and fit; Research and role clarity; Interview brief workshop.
Practical work: Interview brief and fit criteria. Reuse the target brief from PD9 if relevant, then add interview-specific questions.
Module 02Introductions and evidence based answers
Build a small set of adaptable answers rather than memorizing a response to every possible question. Use specific examples and close each story with a clear learning point.
50 minutes instruction + 30 minutes independent study.
Lessons: Opening introduction; CARE answer method; Answer rehearsal lab.
Practical work: Introduction, three full CARE answers, and six-topic story bank covering reliability, pressure, communication, boundaries, collaboration, and cultural humility.
Module 03Role specific interviews and inclusive communication
Adapt answers to the responsibilities of the role while keeping the facts consistent. Demonstrate respectful communication through decisions and actions, including how you respond to correction.
55 minutes instruction + 25 minutes independent study.
Lessons: Choose a role track; Audience and discovery conversations; Inclusion and repair practice.
Practical work: Chosen-track answer sheet and an inclusion-and-repair response. Learners are assessed in one track, not certified in all three roles.
Module 04Boundaries difficult questions and scenario judgment
Show a clear decision process when a question is uncomfortable or a request exceeds your role. Interview fluency should support accurate judgment and honest limits.
50 minutes instruction + 25 minutes independent study.
Lessons: Scenario reasoning with SAFE; Difficult questions with BRIDGE; Boundary scenario practice.
Practical work: Two scenario responses with a short note explaining scope, communication, and escalation decisions.
Module 05Professional terms and opportunity fit
Prepare terms that match the actual work, then ask enough questions to assess fit. A good interview can end in continued discussion, a counteroffer, or a respectful decline.
45 minutes instruction + 25 minutes independent study.
Lessons: Presence and questions; Terms and negotiation; Fit evaluation.
Practical work: Terms planner, five interview questions, and a brief evidence-based fit decision.
Module 06Mock interview follow up and improvement
Bring the preparation together in one realistic interview. Use observed feedback to revise weak answers and leave with a repeatable preparation process for the next opportunity.
55 minutes instruction + 50 minutes independent study.
Lessons: Follow up and rehearsal briefing; Assessed mock interview; Debrief and focused revision.
Practical work: Final preparation toolkit, observed interview, follow-up draft, fit decision, and revised answers. Recordings are optional and require consent from everyone recorded.
What you will create
- An opportunity brief and 60-second introduction
- Three practiced CARE answers and a six-topic story bank
- A role-specific question set and scenario response plan
- A terms planner and opportunity fit scorecard
- Follow-up and reference-request drafts
- An assessed mock interview and seven-day practice plan
How completion is assessed
Complete the six modules and assignments, pass each scenario check, and complete the course’s final assessed task. Instructors provide feedback and a route to revise work that does not yet meet the standard.
The final task is a 25-minute mock interview with feedback, three revised answers, and an interview preparation toolkit.
