Module 01PD1 M1 Listen before advising
Demonstrate open questions, reflective responses and a summary without inserting a solution.
120 minutes instruction + 60 minutes independent study.
Topics: Verbal and nonverbal cues; silence; agenda setting; distinguishing observation from inference; permission before information.
Assignment: Paired interview followed by the speaker rating accuracy of the summary.
Module 02PD1 M2 Consent and access
Obtain permission and adapt a conversation for language, sensory or literacy needs.
120 minutes instruction + 60 minutes independent study.
Topics: Plain language; interpreters; teach-back; trauma-aware choices; remote privacy; cultural humility; disability access.
Assignment: Explain a feeding referral with an interpreter and check the parent can state the next step.
Module 03PD1 M3 Disagreement and repair
Respond to conflict using the client goal, a boundary and a negotiated next action.
120 minutes instruction + 60 minutes independent study.
Topics: Family disagreements; team hierarchy; microaggressions; apology; repair; avoiding coercion; private and public communication.
Assignment: Repeat a difficult exchange after feedback and identify the changed behavior.
Module 04PD1 M4 Referral and reflection
Deliver a concise handoff and evaluate communication using observed evidence.
120 minutes instruction + 60 minutes independent study.
Topics: Consent to share; immediate versus routine messages; read-back; documentation; self-review; professional debrief.
Assignment: Record a role-play and submit a 500-word reflection with two timestamped improvements.
Final assignment
A partner demands a decision while the client asks for more time. Facilitate a three-minute conversation, then respond when the clinical team says the situation is urgent.
Materials and preparation
Digital course workbook, scenario pack and assignment templates; access to a device for reading and submitted work. Use fictional or de-identified examples. Faculty assign selected readings within the stated study hours.
