Experienced birth assistants working with a licensed community-birth team.
What you will learn

- Perform assigned support and communication tasks in a clinician-led emergency drill.
- Support the authorized newborn team and coordinate continuity during transfer.
- Demonstrate reliable teamwork and revise a systems gap after feedback.
Entry & readiness
Birth Assistant Education Program or documented equivalent training and experience; current applicable CPR/BLS; a supervising licensed midwife or other authorized clinician. Provide an existing role description for faculty review before the lab.
How learning works
Blended cohort: 8 hours facilitated learning, 16 hours in-person simulation and assessment, plus 8 hours independent study. Suggested pace: 4 weeks.
Practice & application
All 16 lab hours are simulation within the 24 instructional hours; no client-contact practice is required or counted. Faculty use mannequins and mock records. Clinical faculty review local team protocols and scope before delivery.
Completion requirements
Complete every module and assigned artifact. Pass the knowledge assessment at 85% with all critical safety and scope items correct. Pass the applied assessment at 17/20 or higher, with at least 3/4 in each of five dimensions: accuracy, role boundaries, communication and inclusion, applied judgment, and documentation/reflection. Any critical error requires feedback and reassessment before completion. Live skills sessions are mandatory; missed instruction requires an equivalent assessed make-up.
Scope & credential clarity
Advanced team preparation within the learner's existing authorized role. Simulation does not authorize new clinical procedures, independent obstetric management, medication administration or neonatal resuscitation. Separate credentials and employer authorization remain necessary for restricted tasks.

Teaching schedule. Instruction includes simulation and assessment; independent study and verified client practice are counted separately.
Module 01Role readiness and team agreements
Define responsibilities, escalation routes and stop-points for an advanced assistant.
180 minutes instruction + 60 minutes independent study.
Topics: Scope mapping; role verification; consent; confidentiality; team briefing; current credentials.
Assignment: Submit a role-and-escalation matrix reviewed against the team protocol.
Module 02Environment and equipment readiness
Prepare a reliable work area and identify equipment faults before care begins.
240 minutes instruction + 60 minutes independent study.
Topics: Standard precautions; clean zones; kit checks; manufacturer instructions; restocking; backup supplies.
Assignment: Complete a simulated room and kit audit with a corrected readiness checklist.
Module 03Observation, records and escalation
Communicate observed changes promptly without independently interpreting or treating them.
240 minutes instruction + 90 minutes independent study.
Topics: Objective records; timing; closed-loop communication; clinician-directed observations; refusal and consent.
Assignment: Document a changing scenario and deliver a structured handoff with read-back.
Module 04Urgent parent-care team simulations
Perform assigned support and communication tasks in a clinician-led emergency drill.
300 minutes instruction + 90 minutes independent study.
Topics: Emergency activation; role assignment; supplies; privacy; transport communication; family support.
Assignment: Complete two rotating-role drills with faculty feedback; no independent treatment decisions.
Module 05Newborn-team readiness and transfer
Support the authorized newborn team and coordinate continuity during transfer.
240 minutes instruction + 90 minutes independent study.
Topics: Equipment location; team activation; task boundaries; communication; transfer documents; debrief.
Assignment: Run a newborn-team activation and transfer-log simulation within existing credentials.
Module 06Integrated simulation and improvement
Demonstrate reliable teamwork and revise a systems gap after feedback.
240 minutes instruction + 90 minutes independent study.
Topics: Scenario integration; handoff; professional accountability; incident learning; fatigue and backup.
Assignment: Complete the two-scenario capstone and submit a personal improvement plan.
Final assignment
Complete two observed team scenarios: an escalating parent concern with transfer coordination, and newborn-team activation. Submit a readiness checklist, time-stamped event record, handoff and reflective debrief. Learners act only within their stated role.
Materials and preparation
Digital course workbook, scenario pack and assignment templates; access to a device for reading and submitted work. Use fictional or de-identified examples. Faculty assign selected readings within the stated study hours.
